A Child's Door

German studio jjoo design has developed "a door within a door" that can be reached and opened by a child. Finished with a white chalk-board coating, the door's surface can be painted or drawn on with chalk or water soluble markers which can easily be wiped off. How clever! (via Designboom)

My beautiful backside

‘My beautiful backside’ is a seating collection launched by Moroso during Salone ‘08. Designed by Doshi Levien, this range draws upon a miniature painting of a Maharani (a wife of a great king) sitting on the floor of her palace, surrounded and supported by multiples of pebble shaped cushions. I just love the colours and shapes of these chairs. (via The Chair Blog)

Drawerment

Via The Style Files, I found out about Drawerment, a composition of drawers collected from old office furniture. This simple but gorgeous installation is designed by Hubero Kororo for Dutch label Demakersvan, as a part of their renovated studio in Rotterdam.
I just love the way light and shadow is captured by the drawers and the different textures/colours of aged wood in this installation.
Reminds me a little of the WOZOCO housing project for the elderly (below) that propelled architecture design studio MVRDV to international stardom many years back.

A real polly pocket workspace

This bookcase cum office design definitely fulfills my childhood fantasies of living/working out of a closet box. A little like how Polly Pocket (below) lives.

To make this yourself, just attach a set of bookcases (on wheels) attached along one side and you get a compact, self-contained office nook when opened. In its closed state, it's far tidier than any tidy desk you can make. You may want to plaster the back of one with wallpaper. A deeper bookcase could be attached at one side that will serve as the desk. Brilliant! (via Martha Stewart Living and Chic & Charming)

Papyrus armchair

ohh....I just love the warm honey colour (below) of these arm chairs by French designers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec. Named the 'Papyrus', these chairs were designed for Kartell and launched at the Milan 08 furniture fair last month. Made from transparent polycarbonate, the Papyrus armchair is inspired by the linear, well-defined structure of vintage chairs. For more info and pictures, see here.

Cherry blossom outdoor furniture

What a pretty way to welcome Spring! Klein Dytham architecture have created outdoor furniture resembling giant pink flowers for a cherry blossom party in Tokyo. The seats and tables are made from polystyrene and coated with a urethane surface which "spreads the pressure and stops people in kimonos from puncturing the polystyrene with their chop sticks!" Lovely! (via Dezeen)

The Cabbage Chair

Isn't this chair simply gorgeous?? Designed by Nendo for the XXIst Century Man exhibition curated by Issey Miyake, the cabbage chair is made out of the pleated paper that is produced in mass amounts during the process of making pleated fabric. This paper is usually abandoned as an unwanted by-product.

The cabbage chair is created by peeling away the layers of a roll of pleated paper one layer at a time. Resins are added during the original paper production process to add strength. Since the production process is so simple, the chair could be shipped as one compact roll for the user to cut open and peel back at home.

Chest of Drawers

I am definitely a big fan of reuse and re-appropriation in design that raises questions about the status quo. Tejo Remy is probably one of my favourite designers that I look to for inspiration in this area. His designs has a sense of nostalgia and contemporary function. He often gives it a dry humourous twist by combining old materials and techniques with new modern forms. I really like “Chest of Drawers.” (above). This unorthodox piece is composed of various recycled drawers, all different sizes, colors and shapes, haphazardly bound together with a giant furniture mover's strap. Each piece unique.

Trash Luxe

There will be an exhibition taking place at Liberty in London from 20-30 September 2007 during the London Design Festival called Trash Luxe at Liberty. Curated by dezeen editor Marcus Fairs. This exhibition celebrates over a dozen young designers round the world that create exquisite furniture, lighting and jewellery using cheap or worthless materials. To find out more about the designers whose work will be featured at this exhibition, click here. Below are some of my favourites.

Flat packed cardboard table

This Doca Autunno coffee table is made from cardboard and is created to fold together like a piece of origami. It caused quite a stir, both for its functional and decorative design, when it was shown at the Milan furniture fair in 2005. Each table measures 35.5"l x 22.5"w x 14"h.
