Surface Design Crit

ok, here goes...{ I have to admit that it took a bit of courage to decide to put this up at laissezfaire. =) }

I have recently been dabbling in surface design during whatever free time I have. Since this is something completely new to me, I am hoping to involve more people in this process and get feedback on my designs. The first set of patterns I am working on are inspired by oriental flowers...Which colour combination do you like? Do you see the designs going on a pencil case, pillow case, gift wrap, skirt or wall?

If your have any other thoughts, new ideas, suggestions, inspirations etc, do leave a comment! Whether you are an expert in this field or layman, I would love to hear what you think! I do hope to post more work regularly to invite feedback. Thanks!!

#1: Oriental Bud (blue)
#2 : Oriental bud (lime green)

#3 : Oriental bud (pink)

Good for you! I know what you mean about posting something you're a little hesitant to...it takes courage! But these are awesome...no need to be courageous! I'm particularly drawn to design number two. The color pallete is very sophisticated and would make a really hip wallpaper. I'd love it.

They look great!!

Personally, I like the blue one as lotus design, being very oriental, contrasts nicely with the brown/blue retro feel.

The inverse prints add an element of interest. Guess I could see the design on
- blank greeting card
- journal cover
- a white t-shirt/cotton bag (but just a section of maybe 3x2 buds)

Very nice,
I like the blue best. Try the pink with the lime maybe?

Nice job. There is a little bit of trapped space at the base of the flower -- maybe lower it? Give more weight to the "base" of the flower? Add a stem?

You might also consider other ways of rendering this -- possibly in pen? You could trace the computer design, scan it back in, and color it in photoshop. It might add more of an element of craft to the design.

Constructive crits aside, this also looks good as is. Thanks for sharing.

this is great!! Going with how the colors look on my monitor, I am really liking the lime green version, but they are all wonderful. lovely pattern. I would use it as a nice wrapping paper! I'd also be curious to see what scale the flowers/circles are... depending on how large or small you had it printed it would have different effects for different applications, i'm excited to see where you take this :)

Hi, go to www.teratai.com.my, my web under contruction, see 2nd row middle pic, that is nice, had a lady who did that for me, then she got too busy, she stop designing, that is nice. comes in card n wrapping paper. note book cover will be good. The ones you did is graphical, add more dimension into it, it will be great. a penny for my thought? There are some addition on http://uniquegifts-tmour.blogspot.com/. think you may like it. Thanks

I really like your design! I see it being used for home textiles and paper products. Somehow I don't see it for clothing. My first choice in colour is the third - red/white/pink - scheme. I like the way that the white background lets the colours pop. I also prefer the way that the upside down flower has an accent colour. I'd be interested in seeing the other two colourways with different colours for the upside down flower rather than using the background colour.

I know the feeling. I am also wanting to try my hand at a bit of fabric designing and feel nervous to show it off when it is done! So Well done. Your design is great! Look forward to more.
The blue one is may favourite! And I love the humour of the inverted flower every now and then.

HI, this might seem strange, but your lotus design is almost exactly what I have been looking for for my blog and logo. I am a photographer in Michigan and my company in named, Lotus Photographic. I am wondering if you would make a design for me in digital format based off of this basic design?? I am willing to pay you! Please let me know what you think of this idea and feel free to visit my blog.
Thanks!!
