Takashi Iwasaki

Love these abstract hand embroidery by Takashi Iwasaki. So free and imaginative!
Also love this drawing (below) entitled "An Ideal Street". Speaking as an urban planner (I worked as one for a period of time), yes, this is an ideal street! I wish there were more streets like this in cities round the world!

Maki Squarepatch

Check out the quirky designs made from recycled materials at Maki Squarepatch . Xin, the goody doozy artist/designer behind Make Squarepatch, loves recreating new things out of old stuff such as taking apart children's dolly dresses, boring looking men's pants, school uniforms, jackets etc...and stitching up new creations out of materials that most people will not think twice about throwing away. Xin draws her inspirations from animals with weird hairstyles, the curvaceous body of their 10kg fat cat picasso, classic cartoons and discarded clothes. Her portfolio can be viewed at http://www.handmadebyxin.com/. She is available for commissioned works. This shop is based in Singapore and is happy to work with small businesses worldwide.

Forestprints

Check out these quirky products from Forestprints Design. Launched in 2004 by Singaporean designer Lynda Lye, many of these designs are unique and available in limited numbers. Lynda draws her inspiration for her creations from her wonderful childhood fantasies of bizarre fairytale adventure stories set in magical forests, filled with talking monsters, animals and trees.

Do also check out CRAFThings, an online handcrafted and commercial craft supplies shoppe founded by Lynda to help support the craftsmen and small businesses of the South East Asia region.

Stumpie Seat/Floor Cushion. Wonderful home accessory to spice up your living space!
LOF Snotty Bird. Not giving a care about the daily happenings in this little odd forest, the Snotty Bird just goes about minding its own business.
Forest Seedlings tote. Love the puffy skirt-like bottom
Little Mogu pouch. pss...the space inside goes all the way down to its stem!

Flickr Craft Pool

Via Decor8, I found out about this great flickr craft pool that posts inspiring images mostly from Japanese craft books. I went gaga browsing the 4000+ pics worth of inspiration. A must see if you are into craft, japanese goods (kawaii!), or simply in need of a jot of inspiration for home deco!

Love the natural simplicity and textures of the pics above and the rich colours of these pics below.

By Hand

"By Hand" presents an interesting and diverse group of thirty-two artists, who are discarding their paintbrushes for methods and materials traditionally associated with craft. In these laborious works of art, the process becomes important. From screen printed t-shirts to embroidered toys and knitted landmines, the artists profess their love of methodology while revealing their sometimes obsessive work habits. This book should appeal to anyone who is interested in contemporary culture and D.I.Y. trends.

Silvina Romero

Unique works of art by Silvina Romero, an Argentinian jewelry designer who makes gorgeous, colorful, and tactile wearable works of art from recycled pieces of fabric and textiles. Silvina started working with discarded textiles about four years ago during the height of the Argentinian economic crisis. I have never seen fabric so cleverly manipulated before to form such wonderful shapes.

Sac à faire

For those sewing fanatics out there, check out Sac à faire by Marlene Liska. Basically a 100x70cm large sheet of Tyvek, Sac à faire offers ten different patterns of bags with detailed instructions on how to sew. Am not sure how easy it is to follow the instructions but I just love the look of the end product.

Jill Blissen

Some of the many things I like from Jill Bliss's website. An illustator, crafter, web designer and more, it is no wonder Jill calls herself a "Jill of all trades"! Love the colours and the way she combines fabric, paper, and other found materials in her limited edition handmade pieces and artwork. Extremely inspiring portfolio.

Fancy Faire

Was at the Fancy Faire show at Orchard Hotel today. Started in 1986 as a organisation of women crafters and artisans, Fancy Faire is a wide and unique showcase of arts & crafts, apparel, jewellery, paintings and antiques from all over the world by small businesses without retail outlets. Setting up a booth at a show like this is an excellant way to test the market with any small creative business/retail concept or simply to gain exposure.

The current "summer show" ends today. Be sure to check out their next one in October!
